In occasione della diciottesima edizione dei GDC Awards, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild ha conquistato il premio come gioco dell'anno, avendo la meglio su Horizon Zero Dawn, NieR: Automata, Super Mario Odyssey e Playerunknown's Battlegrounds.
L'ultima avventura di Link si è portata a casa anche i riconoscimenti per il miglior audio e il miglior design. Cuphead ha primeggiato nella categorie Best Debut e Best Visual Art, mentre Gorogoa, il puzzle game sviluppato da Jason Roberts e pubblicato da Annapurna Interactive, ha conquistato la categoria mobile e l'Innovation Award. L'Audience Award è andato a NieR: Automata.
A Rami Ismail è stato assegnato l'Ambassador Award, mentre il leggendario Tim Schafer ha ricevuto il Lifetime Achievement Award.
