Annunciata l'8 ottobre 2019 e venduta in Italia a partire dal 19 novembre 2020, la nuova console ha introdotto diverse novità, come il controller DualSense con feedback aptico, un SSD personalizzato, lettore Blu-Ray 4K, il supporto alla risoluzione 8K e l’audio 3D. PS5 è compatibile sia con il visore per la realtà virtuale PlayStation VR, che con il suo successore, PlayStation VR 2. La console è basata su un processore Zen 2 di AMD con 8 core a una frequenza variabile limitata a 3,5 GHz e una GPU personalizzata, basata sulla tecnologia RDNA 2 di AMD, con 36 unità di calcolo funzionanti a frequenza variabile, limitata a 2,23 GHz e capace di 10,28 TFLOPS.
